Are You Affected by the Banana Boat Sunscreen Recall?

Last week, Edgewell Personal Care Company announced they have initiated a voluntary recall of Banana Boat sunscreen. In a recent press release, Edgewell revealed an initial review found the presence of benzene in at least three batches of Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30, which are packaged in aerosol cans.

Edgewell’s statement describes, “Banana Boat is voluntarily recalling three production batches of Banana Boat hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 aerosol sprays due to trace levels of benzene. We know that you love our products, and we are conducting this recall out of an abundance of caution. Importantly, no other batches of Hair & Scalp (either before or ater these batch codes) and no other Banana Boat products are in the scope of this recall and may continue to be used by consumers safely and as intended.”

The three batches affected by the recall are:

  • 6 oz Banana Boat Hair & Scalp SPF 30; Lot Code: 20016AF with an expiration date of December 2022
  • 6 oz Banana Boat Hair & Scalp SPF 30; Lot Code: 2008AF with an expiration date of February 2023
  • 6 oz Banana Boat Hair & Scalp SPF 30; Lot Code: 21139AF with an expiration date of April 2024

Now, the company admits that benzene is not an ingredient they use in their Banana Boat sunscreen products. The tracc levels of benzene found in the review were remnants of the propellant used during the distribution of the product in its packaging.

To assist in the recall, the company has also added new questions to its website’s FAQ page. These additions further clarify which products have been impacted by the recall and how customers can request reimbursement if they have purchased one of the affected items. Also, the updated FAQ describes what other actions a consumer can take if they purchased an item from one of the affected lots.

Fortunately, Edgewell has not received any cautionary reports regarding adverse reactions in relation to this recall. This means no one has been harmed, and Edgewell has notified retailers to remove the products from store shelves.
